How research brought clarity and understanding for a user-centred digital roadmap

This extensive research project included user profiling, research interviews, stakeholder workshops and taxonomy design, to understand how to consolidate Education & Training Foundation’s digital estate.


The Education & Training Foundation exists to enhance the quality of teaching in the Further Education (FE) sector. With a membership of 22,000 FE professionals, it provides CPD training opportunities and resources to develop the FE and training sector. ET Foundation’s question to us was how to create ‘synergy’ between its digital estate of 22 websites; to help users navigate quickly and easily. We sought to understand how its members navigated to relevant products and services, and how the journey could be enhanced.


Each phase of research built on the previous, expanding the understanding of their users’ existing experience and identifying steps to create their ideal experience. By recognising repetitive and underperforming journeys, we were able to recommend that the digital roadmap consists of mapping new, ideal user journeys to ensure customers could quickly and efficiently find the content they were looking for.

This evidence-based approach delivered user-centred clarity to define ET Foundation’s digital roadmap.

Common themes emerged including clearer icons, navigation, buttons, and a preference for a particular design. By sourcing this data before committing the designs to development, Compare The Market were able to learn what was working about the designs and what was required to move it forwards. And the affirmation that the meerkats are much-loved characters!

Through user-driven insight, Education & Training Foundation’s digital roadmap consists of recommendations to help improve the user experience and support those looking to professionally develop in the FE sector.
